City Manager Candidate Reception - Nov. 6

The SeaTac City Council has selected two finalists for the position of City Manager and is inviting the community to a public reception from 4–6 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 6 to meet and hear from the candidates. See the blog post for candidate bio's.

The Council will interview the finalists on Thursday, Nov. 7 and is expected to announce the individual selected for the position by mid-November.

Twenty-eight candidates were recruited and screened by an executive search firm. The firm interviewed top applicants, and the candidates best aligned with the City’s priorities and needs were recommended to the Council for further review.

The Council will make a final selection in mid-November.

November 4, 2024.  

The SeaTac City Council has selected two finalists for the position of city manager.  

William Appleton has over 27 years of public service that began in the Army Corps of Engineers where he served as a Project Manager. He spent several years in the private and public sectors doing Engineering work. He has spent the last eight years as the Public Works Director for the City of SeaTac, WA. Prior to coming to SeaTac, he worked with the City of Federal Way, WA for over 12 years holding multiple positions, including: Engineering Review Manager, Surface Water Manager and Deputy Public Works Director. Mr. Appleton has both a Master and Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering from Purdue University. 

Jonathan Young has approximately 16 years of public sector experience, primarily in Washington municipal law.  For the past five years, he has served as City Attorney of Vancouver, WA.  Before that, Mr. Young worked as the City Division Chief of Vancouver’s Law Department and as an Assistant City Attorney.  Prior to coming to the City of Vancouver, he served as the Deputy Prosecuting Attorney for Benton County, WA. Mr. Young holds a Juris Doctorate from Gonzaga University School of Law and a Bachelor of Arts in Accounting. He is also a member of the International City Management Association. 

Staff and community members will have the opportunity to meet the candidates at an open-house style reception today, 4-6 p.m. in Council chambers. Participants will be able to chat one-on-one with the candidates and provide feedback to the Council. 

The Council will interview both candidates on Thursday, November 7, 2024. 

The Council is expected to announce their selected candidate in mid-November. 

October 28, 2024. The SeaTac City Council has selected two finalists for the position of city manager. The community is invited to a public reception to meet and hear from the candidates.

October 1, 2024To date, 28 candidates have applied for the City Manager position. The search firm is reviewing the applications to prepare for an October 10 session with the City Council to review the applications that best match the candidate profile.

September 11, 2024. Our City Manager recruitment is moving along! So far, we have 14 applications for the position with a week and a half left in our first review timeline (September 22, 2024). I don't know about you, but I am getting excited! Once we have an opportunity to review the first set of applications, we will be providing a public update of the status of the recruitment and the next steps in the process. Stay tuned!

August 12, 2024. We want to provide a brief update on our progress in our recruitment process for a new City Manager. July 30, 2024. We want to keep our community informed about the ongoing recruitment process for our new City Manager. We experienced a minor delay in the process due to recent flooding, which temporarily impacted our schedule. However, we are pleased to announce that we are back on track and have made significant progress. Today, we held our kickoff meeting with our selected consultants, GMP Consulting. This meeting was an important step in outlining the recruitment strategy and timeline to ensure we find the best candidate for the role. We appreciate your patience and understanding as we navigate these challenges, and we will continue to provide updates as we move forward.
